Reflection #2 About 400 words Complete the Exploration Reflection as described here: Each of you has an area of health in which you are interested; maybe several actually. You chose one for the first reflection and ‘listened’ to an author discuss it and provided several kinds of input. You provided 3 of the major ideas about that area in health that were stated by an author along with a major strength and a major challenge. Now you will take time to investigate this topic on a more granular level. Go to the scientific literature using one of the databases at the Health Science Library website: https://hsl.osu.edu/ (Links to an external site.) . For some of you, expect to NOT use PubMed but perhaps CINAHL as you may need to investigate other databases. Please do NOT go through Google Scholar. Find a review article about your topic of interest (this could be a systematic review or a meta-analysis). NOTE: you will need to THINK about the search terms you use and try them out. There is no right or wrong! This is for your own EXPLORATION. If you used a TED talk that described a problem that could have several different kinds of descriptions (i.e. discrimination against people with disabilities or a particular disease –like Alzheimer’s, or the associated lack of educational opportunities for these people with disability or impact of a prevention program for a condition like Alzheimer’s or obesity), then you must decide which actual topic you will choose going forward (e.g. the discrimination’s impact versus the educational opportunities versus an actual disease). Using your major topic area, find a REVIEW article. State the ‘search criteria you used to find this review’ and after reading the review, answer questions below and abide by the word limit (be efficient with your words). Each step will be laid out below. 1. Identify here the TED or Podcast citation: 2. List the 3 major ideas you chose (do not re-write your paragraph from reflection #1-just put the ideas in bullets numbered 1,2,3). 3. LIST the Database you used AND the search terms used to find your review article. Use a review within the last 10 years. DATABASE AND TERMS/MODIFIERS WERE: 4. Put the FULL citation of the article you choose here and the link (so that we can access it): 5. After reading the entire review article, you will be more informed compared to the TED talk, so answer these and please use writing style as described in Reflection #1: 6. (no more than 150 words). Describe the primary focus of this review article: 7. (no more than 150 words). List 3 major ideas that were new to you now that you’ve read this: 8. (no more than 100 words). What’s next to understand? If you had to choose one key concept to NOW understand further, what is it? Give details on this concept why it is important for further study. Identify the reference(s) inside this review article that you would use to learn more (citation only; no link needed)? (This could be something YOU want to learn or something that is next to learn in general about the topic area). Rubric: 1. Clarity & concise answers in 1 thru 5. (5 pts total--half of points subtracted for writing errors). 2. Presents 3 different ideas in 5B with clarity; uses good writing-described in reflection #1 (3 pts). 3. Suggestion of next steps in exploration in 5c provides view of student’s critical thinking on the topic; clearly knows how to use literature to learn further; uses good writing skills (2 pts). Reflection #3 About 400 words Each of you has an area of health in which you are interested; maybe several actually. You chose one for the first reflection and ‘listened’ to an author discuss it and provided several kinds of input. You provided 3 of the major ideas about that area in health that were stated by an author along with a major strength and a major challenge. In Reflection #2, you explored what else has been reviewed by another author(s) about your topic of interest. You described what you learned by writing about 3 ideas or pieces of information that were new to you and one concept that represented the ‘next steps’ in understanding that topic or area of interest. In this final Reflection (#3), you will explore an actual research study done by another group that investigated some aspect of the general topic you chose. What kind of research study? (look for randomized controlled clinical trials-RCTs, or cohort studies, or case reports) Essentially, you need to find a study that conducts an experiment or in some way has a comparison study. (What is NOT a research study? Another review article, an editorial, a systematic review of other studies, a meta-analysis of a variety of studies). You might consider using search terms as you did for #2’s reflection but NOT clicking ‘review’. Or, you might really read closely your review again and find a research study there in the references in the back! Use the Health Science Library website: https://hsl.osu.edu/ (Links to an external site.). Please do NOT go through Google Scholar. For the reviewer’s ease of reading, use each step below: 1. Identify here the TED or Podcast citation: 2. List the 3 major ideas you chose (do not re-write your paragraph from reflection #1-just put the ideas in bullets numbered 1,2,3). 3. Put the FULL citation of the RESEARCH article you choose here and the PDF (so that we can access it): 4. After reading the entire RESEARCH article, you will be more informed, so answer these and use the more formal writing style as described in Reflection #1 : 5. (no more than 100 words). Describe the primary aim or research question-what are the authors trying to determine + why (u often find this in their introduction---do NOT quote them): 6. (no more than 150 words). Describe the methods used—not outcomes---just methods. Describe what the author(s) did to their population(s): 7. (no more than 200 words). Describe 1) the major outcomes, 2) the relevance to your topic AND 3) what the authors suggest is next to understand/explore? Rubric: 1. Clarity & concise answers in 1-4a. (4 pts total--half of points subtracted for writing errors). 2. Presents 4b (methods) with clarity; uses good writing-described in reflection #1 (2 pts). 3. Presents 4c with clarity and provides view of student’s critical/relevant thinking on the topic; clearly knows how to use literature to learn further; uses good writing skills (4 pts).

REFLECTION 2
The TED Talk selected was titled A Tale of Mental Illness-From the Inside by Elyn Saks. It is 14:46 minutes long. The citation is Saks, E. (2012). A Tale of Mental Illness –From the Inside. Retrieved from /talks/elyn_saks_a_tale_of_mental_illness_from_the_inside?referrer=playlist-all_kinds_of_minds
I was able to narrow down the list to the following three ideas.
1 Discrimination against people with mental health.
2 Facts and myths surrounding mental health.
3 Awareness of mental illness in patients and the general public.
After coming up with these three ideas, I filtered through the database titled APA Psycnet.
* The database and terms/modifiers used to search for the article were Mental Illness Stigma.
Link, B. G., Wells, J., Phelan, J. C., & Yang, L. (2015). Understanding the importance of “symbolic interaction stigma”: How expectations about the reactions of others adds to the burden of mental illness stigma. Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal, 38(2), 117–124. https://doi.org/10.1037/prj0000142
This review article focuses on the stigma that mental health patients have faced because of their illness. Mental health issues being a relatively new thing and an unacceptable fact in society, people diagnosed with the illness face a lot of challenges in their daily lives. There are various standards that the review used to come up with data on stigmatization and discrimination. First, there is perceived stigma, experienced stigma from other people and self-stigmatization. These were the primary focal points of the paper that attempted to bring to light the severity of the situation. The respondents were able to help out in bringing accurate results back in partnership with other studies. Through statistical analysis, the article reviews how patients feel and the various ways in which society stigmatizes them because of their health. Mostly it is due to little knowledge and information and also due to societal conditioning of the mind.
New Areas To me:
1 The three major ideas that were new to me is the fact that first, I did not know that there were three levels of stigmatization. Initially, I believed that it was just one. Stigmatization from the public. However, I learned of two more, self-stigmatization and perceived stigmatization.
2 Secondly, stereotyping runs deeper in society than we believe. People confuse the various mental illnesses there are and simply choose to group them into one group of insane people. Not realizing that there are a lot of more other mental issues in the current world we are living in.
3 Finally, I learned that some mental illnesses start manifesting earlier in life, others manifest later and others do not manifest until triggered. Such as depression. Every stage of the mental health journey is characterized by a number of issues that should be addressed. Especially in the societal setup and in the family.
What Next to Understand
I would like to learn more about the other mental illnesses that exist such as schizophrenia, anxiety, bipolar, autism and many...
