Discussion: Healthcare Information Technology Trends

Throughout history, technological advancements have appeared for one purpose before finding applications elsewhere that lead to spikes in its usage and development. The internet, for example, was originally developed to share research before becoming a staple of work and entertainment. But technology—new and repurposed—will undoubtedly continue to be a driver of healthcare information. Informaticists often stay tuned to trends to monitor what the next new technology will be or how the next new idea for applying existing technology can benefit outcomes.

In this Discussion, you will reflect on your healthcare organization’s use of technology and offer a technology trend you observe in your environment.

To Prepare:

Reflect on the Resources related to digital information tools and technologies.

Consider your healthcare organization’s use of healthcare technologies to manage and distribute information.

Reflect on current and potential future trends, such as use of social media and mobile applications/telehealth, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled asset tracking, or expert systems/artificial intelligence, and how they may impact nursing practice and healthcare delivery.

By Day 3 of Week 6

Post a brief description of general healthcare technology trends, particularly related to data/information you have observed in use in your healthcare organization or nursing practice. Describe any potential challenges or risks that may be inherent in the technologies associated with these trends you described. Then, describe at least one potential benefit and one potential risk associated with data safety, legislation, and patient care for the technologies you described. Next, explain which healthcare technology trends you believe are most promising for impacting healthcare technology in nursing practice and explain why. Describe whether this promise will contribute to improvements in patient care outcomes, efficiencies, or data management. Be specific and provide examples.

General Healthcare Technology Trends
Technological advancements have found application in the healthcare sector. Healthcare technology trends related to data/information have found wide applicability in the sector. Electronic health records (EHR), telemedicine, and big data analytics are healthcare trends revolutionizing the healthcare sector. EHR entails a digital version of a patient’s paper charts. According to the HealthIT.gov. (2018), EHR makes patient information available to authorized users. Telemedicine uses telecommunications technology to diagnose and treat patients remotely (CDC, 2020). The approach is effective in minimizing contact between the patient and healthcare providers. Big data analytics facilitates the analysis of large datasets to establish colorations and develop predictive models (Galetsi & Katsaliaki, 2020). The approach enables the use of tools that enhance insights into data from complex heterogeneous sources.
Potential challenges or risks
Implementation of EHR brings about privacy concerns. Patients and providers may be concerned about losing information because of natural disasters and cyber-attacks (Keshta & Odeh, 2021). Additionally, the initial cost of an EHR system is high. A healthcare organization must invest in expensive hardware and software and acquire the required technical IT staff. Maintaining an EHR system is high and costly to healthcare facilities. Big data analytics faces the problem of inadequate data governing procedures (Sivarajah, Kamal, Irani & Weerakkody, 2017). Capturing the data from different sources is problematic for providers. Sometimes the data needs aggregation, cleaning, and formatting, which increases costs. For telemedicine, physical examination is limited. Healthcare providers cannot conduct physical examinations of patients, which may reduce the effectiveness of the technology. Further, the technology can complicate patients since it may require them to acquire equipment and software. Technology illiterate patients may find using the approach challenging and opt for normal clinic visits (Triana, 2020).
Describe at least one potential benefit and one potential risk associated with data safety, legislation, and patient care for the technologies you described.
Data safety
The potential benefit of the technologies outlined above lies in their security to protect patient data. As Kruse et al. (2017) indicate, these technologies use cryptography to protect patient data, thus guaranteeing safety.
However, a potential risk would be the threat of hackers who are likely to cause damage if or when they gain access to the databases storing patient data.
Legislation
The potential advantage of the technology trends regarding legislation is helping providers minimize liability to court cases due to medication errors and high readmission. In other words, since the technologies enhance efficiency, healthcare providers avoid liability from patients.
The potential risk with the technologies is problems with licensure and cross-jurisdictional regulation of standards (Doxzen, Signé, & Bowman, 2022). Having a regulation that cuts across the various technologies is challenging, which may limit the ability of the government to control the us...
