Research Paper Instructions:

Evidence-Based Practice Proposal - Section C: Solution Description
Write a paper of 500-750 words for your proposed evidence-based practice project solution. Address the following criteria:
Proposed Solution: (a) Describe the proposed solution (or intervention) for the problem and the way(s) in which it is consistent with current evidence. Heavily reference and provide substantial evidence for your solution or intervention. (b) Consider if the intervention may be unrealistic in your setting, if it may be too costly, or if there is a lack of appropriate training available to deliver the intervention. If the intervention is unrealistic, you may need to go back and make changes to your problem statement before continuing.
Organization Culture: Explain the way(s) in which the proposed solution is consistent with the organization or community culture and resources.
Expected Outcomes: Explain the expected outcomes of the project. The outcomes should flow from the problem statement.
Method to Achieve Outcomes: Develop an outline of how the outcomes will be achieved. List any specific barriers that will need to be assessed and eliminated. Make sure to mention any assumptions or limitations that may need to be addressed.
Outcome Impact: Describe the impact the outcomes will have on one or all of the following indicators: quality care improvement, patient-centered quality care, efficiency of processes, environmental changes, or professional expertise.

Proposed Solution and Current Evidence
The proposed solution consists of installing a modern surgical plume evacuation system that comprises a downward airflow system for the filtering and redistribution of the filtered air to the operating theatres. During measurements of particulate matter in operating rooms, Romano et al (2017) found that the ventilation system involving a unidirectional downward flow of surgical smoke eliminated contaminants more effectively compared to the upward smoke displacement system. The proposed system can also comprise a wall suction with a smoke evacuator and a particulate filter. Such a system was found to filter almost 100% of all contaminants in the size range of 0.12 microns (in diameter) and higher (Schultz, 2014). In a related study, Schultz (2015) found that the placement of a suction device close to the site of electrosurgery minimized the number of viable bacteria in the diathermy plume. The study recommended the use of suction devices to reduce incidences of infections at the surgical site.
The viability of the proposed solution is further supported by the findings that many healthcare professionals in the operating room do not understand the full spectrum of the risks they are exposed to. In one of such studies, a negative diagnosis for infectious diseases in a patient made many professionals feel okay not using a respirator. Also, 56% and 48% of specialists in electrosurgery and laser surgery respectively said they did not wear respirators because it was not their protocol (Steege, Boiano, & Sweeney, 2016)-59(11). These results show that a smoke evacuation system that reduces exposure to the health risks of the surgical plume can help in bridging these gaps in the usage of other alternatives such as respirators and surgical masks.
Intervention is Realistic
The proposed intervention is realistic considering that Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital has a culture of continuous improvement, especially in the areas of the working environment. Moreover, the various professionals in the surgical units generally agree that it is time to transform the work environ...
