Evidence-based Nursing Practice
In the health care provision there are clinical problems that fall under the nursing jurisdiction. One of the clinical problems that fall under the nursing control is the pressure ulcers. The purpose of this paper is to analyze a specific clinical problem that falls under the control of the nurses.
Practice setting problem
Pressure ulcers are one of the clinical problems that fall under the control of the nurses. Pressure ulcers also known as bed sores can be described as injuries to the skin and the underlying tissues emanating from prolonged pressure on the skin. Qaseem, Mir, Starkey & Denberg (2015) observe that; pressure ulcers mainly develop on the skin covering the bony parts of the body. This is because; the pressure is escalated by the force of the bones. Pressure ulcers mainly affect the heel, hips and the ankles. The most affected patients are those that have illnesses or injuries that limit their movement. Such patients spent a lot of time either sitting or sleeping. These postures exert a lot of pressure to the body hence the development of the pressure ulcers. Pressure ulcers develop very fast and in most times they prove difficult to treat. However, measures can always be taken to prevent them.
Significance to nursing practice
Kernan, Ovbiagele, Black et al (2014) maintain that; the awareness of this clinical problem is important to the nursing practice especially when the clinical problem falls under the control of the nurses. It is therefore significant for the nurses to have knowledge on this clinical problem so as to take measures to control the occurrence of the same. When the nurses have knowledge on the pressure ulcers, they are able to identify them and even manage them in the best way possible. This way the pain is mitigated and eventually the patients get cured.
The BSN prepared nurses are expected to be able to identify the pressure ulcers. They are also supposed to be able to identify the patients with higher risks of developing the pressure ulcers so that measures to control the development of the bedsores. The BSN prepared nurses, in addition to those of RN are supposed to be able to take management measures such that the pain of the pressure ulcers is mitigated as cure is awaited. This way the patients will not have to withstand the excruciating pain of the pressure ulcers. Early identification of the ulcers ensures that measures are taken to prevent worsening of the condition.
Impact on patient and/ or community
As Neilson, Avita, Willock & Broad (2014) found out; pressure ulcers mainly affect the older patients especially from the age of 60 years and above. It is prevalent in the older patients who have illnesses that restrict them to wheel chairs or bound them to spent most of the time sleeping. The pressure ulcers have great impact on the patients ranging from physical to social and psychological. Physically, the patients experience pain from the pressure ulcers. This is a compounded problem considering that the patients are already ailing from other illnesses and that is why they are in hospital and immobilized. Socially the patients may feel that they do...
