The new edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) released in the year 2013, has additional changes to the diagnostic measures related to the sleeping disorders (Grohol, 2014). These are guaranteed to help generate better and more accurate diagnosis leading to even better plans for the treatment of the same.
As for the Anorexia Nervosa diagnostic criteria, the main aspects include the fear of gaining weight, distorted self image, and the unwillingness to maintain a healthy weight and the relentless search of a thin body frame as well the aspect of being emaciated. The idea of the lack of menstrual cycle (Amenorrhea) has been scraped from the criterion D, given that it can only be applied on the female patients. Behavioral changes in the patients now include the resistance to calories intake in criterion A.
With respect to the Bulimia Nervosa, it relates to the aspects of patients that are not in a position to control their eating habits and amounts taken. The behavioral changes that are common on a weekly basis include exercising excessively, vomiting, using laxatives excessively and fasting.
According to the DSM-V, patients with binge eating disorders are likely to show signs of eating too much food in a single sitting more than any other normal person would take in. They have limited self control with respect to the amounts that they take regardless of the hungers signals and the fullness signs.
The etiology of the eating disorders ties to several factors such as biological ones. With respect to the latter, temperaments of the patients play a great role. Some of the most vulnerable persons are those that have been diagnosed with Obsessive-compulsive temperament and those that have sensitive avoidant behaviors. Research has shown that the genetics of the patients have a great role to play as reflected in the temperaments that are prone. The psychological factors also affect the way patients develop eating disorders. Perfectionists are highest on the list as they never feel satisfied with what they have and what they have achieved. As such, to them the eating disorder is their way of gaining control. Family factors have also been found to lead to the disorders.
