Research Paper Instructions:
Congratulations! You have just been hired as a health educator for the Springdale Community Health Foundation. They have funding for a program in your area, but the Board of Directors wants information and a plan before committing the funds. You have been asked to assess local needs, develop a program plan, and propose it to the Foundation for funding. This will be the focus of the assignments throughout the course. The rubric linked at the bottom of this page will be used to assess the quality of your papers and assign a grade for all assignments in this course. Please review it carefully before you begin each assignment. Your paper will be graded on the following attributes: organization, contextual awareness, knowledge of conventions, and appropriate use of sources and evidence. The point value for each attribute and what you'll need to do in order to earn the maximum possible points on this assignment can be found in the writing rubric. The purpose of using this rubric is to assist you in strengthening your written communication skills. As you know, this is a skill set that's essential for establishing a successful career. If you have any questions regarding the expectations as outlined in the rubric, please don't hesitate to bring them to my attention. To begin your papers for this course, consider your geographic area in terms of diseases, health conditions, or health-related threats. In order to do this, you will have to access various sources of health related data and statistics. You may want to begin with your local or state health department's Website. You should identify a problem that truly is problematic for a certain geographic area or population group. Your geographic area could be your home town or it could be where you are currently living … it is up to you. What kind of problem could you focus on? Consider some of the following examples: · One person's county may have a rate of Measles that's higher than any other in the state. · Another person's county may have rates of teenage pregnancy that are well above the national average. · Still another person may be in one of the branches of the military and may have noticed that their current duty station may be having trouble with weight gain. · Finally, another student may notice that their home town has one of the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the state. * I want the paper to be written about sexually transmitted diseases STD's mainly chlamydia since the area I am stationed Fort Sill/Lawton Oklahoma was a high rate of this disease in the state of Oklahoma!!!!! As you can see, there are many different ways you can approach this project. In seeking out your sources of health related statistics and identifying areas where a health education program would be beneficial, you should identify a disease, health condition, or health risk that is directly impacting a community or population group. Once you have decided upon a disease, health condition, or health risk, you will prepare a 3 page paper, in which you discuss the following: 1. Identify the health need that you will tell the Springdale Community Health Foundation that you want to address in your community. 2. Explain your rationale for saying your area needs a health education program on the issue you identified. This should include a discussion of the geographic distribution of the issue, using appropriate sources of health-related data. Provide statistics that demonstrate the need for the health education program that you are proposing. Specifically, what is the incidence of the disease or condition in the geographic area or population you will be considering? How does this compare to the rest of the state/country? 3. Briefly describe how this disease, condition, or health risk is caused. Specifically mention biological, social, environmental, and behavioral factors. Also, discuss predisposing, reinforcing, and enabling factors (that you learned about in BHE302) specific to this health issue. State which factors are predisposing, which are reinforcing, etc. ASSIGNMENT EXPECTATIONS Writing Use this rubric to see how I will evaluate your writing. You should be writing like a professional health educator by the end of the session. Review the rubric before beginning your paper BSHS Writing Rubric . It will be used to assess your papers. Format Remember that all of your work should be prepared using appropriate format. The link on your course syllabus page will help reinforce formatting expectations: http://www(dot)trident(dot)edu/guidelines/Well-Written-Paper.pdf Scholarly Content Your SLP and your case assignments are considered scholarly works. Your final work should include a MINIMUM of 10 peer reviewed (scholarly) sources. This does not mean that you must place 10 peer reviewed sources in each module of your SLP. I anticipate that the nature of the questions which must be answered in this project will result in the accumulation of more than 10 references, but 10 is the minimum number. At the end of module 5, you will have to verify that you have AT MINIMUM, a total of 10 scholarly-peer reviewed publications in all of your submitted papers. I can go back and count them, too. If you are uncertain what a peer reviewed (scholarly) source is, please review What is a Scholarly Article, by California State university Chico (CSUChico), available at http://www(dot)csuchico(dot)edu/lins/handouts/scholarly.pdf Appropriate Headings and Paper Flow Remember that you are preparing a formal academic paper. Your paper should make use of appropriate headings and subheadings. You should not cut & paste the questions posed and answer them like a “Question and Answer” session. Your finished paper should read like an academic paper. In order to earn full credit: You will be assessed on your ability to communicate your points from the perspective of a health educator. Please write your paper in your own words. That is the only way I can evaluate your level of understanding. Your papers will be evaluated on the following factors: -References - citations are used within the body of the paper any time you state a fact or idea that is not common knowledge and a reference list is included at the end of the paper. -Precision - you follow all instructions and you answer each part of the assignment. -Breadth - you show broad knowledge of the module's topic. -Depth - you go into detail to show more critical thought about the specific assignment. -Clarity - the extent to which you elaborate and include discussion or examples as asked. -Application - the extent to which you apply the information to a real-life situation related to the assignment, if appropriate.

Chlamydia
Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted disease. It is caused by a bacterium and infects both men and women. The bacterium causing chlamydia is referred to as Chlamydia trachomatis. It is ranked among the highest reported sexually transmitted disease in the United States. Chlamydia trachomatis is found to live only in human cells. The infection can also be passed from an infected mother to her baby during the process of vaginal childbirth. The main obstacle faced in the fight against chlamydia is that there are no easily recognizable symptoms. Statistics show that about half to three-quarters of all women with cervicitis (chlamydia infection of the cervix) experience no symptoms and have no clue that they are infected. Infections in men is, however, symptomatic with a white discharge emanating from the penis on urinating, with or without pain. If the infection is not treated as early as possible, it can cause serious reproductive and other health problems with short and long term consequences. Having understood the hazards the infection is likely to cause, it becomes apparent that the fight against it is very vital. The highest number of people in my locale is ignorant about the infection, how it is transmitted or even the symptoms that come with it. A health education program in this regard will be very timely and help in the fight against the disease. Knowledge is always better than lack of it, when people are made aware of the prevalence and incidence of the disease; it becomes very easy to take on preventive and eradication measures. Due to the asymptomatic nature of the infection, carriers have a very high chance of transmitting the infection from one person to another and the fight is always lost. The main aim of the education program is to spread awareness on the need to have frequent tests on the disease. Frequent tests will enable immediate treatment for the infected people spearheading the fight against the infection. Lawton Oklahoma has quite a big population. Past statistics having shown that there is a rate of infection, there is urgent need to curtail the sexually transmitted disease. Young people, mostly in the adolescent age are much sexually active. Education is very necessary, first to educate the youth on the dangers of being sexually active at tender ages and, second, this will further help in the fight against chlamydia and other sexually transmitted diseases. The fight cannot be won if preventive measures are not effective. Persuasive means will always be effective as they achieve voluntary conformation.Chlamydia prevention has in the past been impeded by inadequacy of laboratory tests for diagnosis and screening as the case may be. Through combined education and suitable patient care, efforts can be combined towards decreasing the morbidity and costs incurred as a result of the infection.
