Throughout history, technological advancements have appeared for one purpose before finding applications elsewhere that lead to spikes in its usage and development. The internet, for example, was originally developed to share research before becoming a staple of work and entertainment. But technology—new and repurposed—will undoubtedly continue to be a driver of healthcare information. Informaticists often stay tuned to trends to monitor what the next new technology will be or how the next new idea for applying existing technology can benefit outcomes.

In this Discussion, you will reflect on your healthcare organization’s use of technology and offer a technology trend you observe in your environment.

To Prepare:

Reflect on the Resources related to digital information tools and technologies.

Consider your healthcare organization’s use of healthcare technologies to manage and distribute information.

Reflect on current and potential future trends, such as use of social media and mobile applications/telehealth, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled asset tracking, or expert systems/artificial intelligence, and how they may impact nursing practice and healthcare delivery.

By Day 3 of Week 6

Post a brief description of general healthcare technology trends, particularly related to data/information you have observed in use in your healthcare organization or nursing practice. Describe any potential challenges or risks that may be inherent in the technologies associated with these trends you described. Then, describe at least one potential benefit and one potential risk associated with data safety, legislation, and patient care for the technologies you described. Benefits of Using Big Data 
One of the numerous potential benefits of using big data as part of a clinical system relates to aiding clinicians' decision-making process at the point of care. Big data refers to aggregate data collected from wearable devices, hospital records, pharmaceuticals, and research data (Shanthagiri, 2014). This large complex data can be used to yield substantially more information critical in decision-making when analyzed as an entirely incorporated data set as compared to the information contained in smaller sets of the same data that is unintegrated. Big data captures the entire context of why a patient is suffering from a particular illness and even why they sought health care. Capturing relevant detailed patient information heightens clinicians' decision-making capacity, particularly in relation to the implementation of evidence-based medicine (Glassman, 2017). Another potential benefit of using big data is that of improved patient safety and outcomes: big data makes it possible for nurses to compare current and historical patient data to make more context-informed healthcare decisions. Analyzing big data enables clinicians to identify feasible opportunities for improving patient safety and outcomes in the long term.
One potential challenge of using big data as part of a clinical system is the lack of data standardization: a significant number of healthcare organizations have built their technology system in silos, a factor that impedes the synthesis of big data. Big data is only useful when all discrete data sets can fit into predefined data models for analysis. When various departments in a healthcare organization are using different metrics, it is difficult to accurately assess how a particular unit is performing or even make well-informed decisions about which areas to change (Thew, 2016). Another risk of using big data relates to security and privacy breaches: hacking attacks that compromise individual patient records have been on the rise in recent years.
