Failure Of High Strength Nuts Case Study Research

Research Paper Instructions:

Assignment Overview: Students will conduct a literature search of different case studies published in journals. Each student will prepare a short one-page summary of different case studies that they are interested in further studying. The report will be used in order to provide feedback and help guide the student in selecting an appropriate case study for an in-depth Case Study Presentation.
Each student should identify between 3-5 different case studies from the literature that you are interested in learning more about. The Engineering Failure Analysis journal is a good place to start. Your one-page summary should include a short, one-paragraph description of each of the case studies that you selected and should also describe why you are interested in possibly learning more about that case study.

The case “Failure of High Strength Nuts” discusses the failure analysis and testing of Inconel 718 nuts from high-performance aircraft. Failures took place after installation, before any aircraft loading being applied (Balan & Reddy, 2017). A review of the procurement data showed the nuts that failed had successfully passed lots of tests. This raised concerns about the existing procurement test suggesting that the requirements were inadequate to identify the nuts which could fail in service unexpectedly (Andrew, et al., 2017). Another reason for the failure could the shanking on one of the nuts that failed. Torque and distance the nut traveled were the measures of performance. The testing method provided quantitative data determining manufacturing process’ impact and that microstructure features cannot explain nuts performance.
The case “Hydrogen damage of steels” uses hydrogen embrittlement model. It was observed boiler components damages in several cases were as a result of the use as well as localization of hydrogen. In this article, “the damaged boiler tube was of grade 20 – St.20 (or 20G, equivalent to AISI 1020)” (Djukic et al., 2015). Two distinctive cases showed that high-temperature hydrogen attack is a primary cause. Results exposed simultaneous action of the hydrogen embrittlement mechanism, HELP and HEDE, but it depends on hydrogen’s local concentration in the steel (Djukic et al., 2015; Escobar et al., 2011). The basis of the ...
