Etiology (Cause or origin): Bruno Bettleheim argued that ASD was an emotional disorder which developed among kids due to psychological harm caused by their mothers. He also wrote several books and featured in magazines and prime television programs discussing his theory. Although there is no research that shows any single cause of ASD, there are suggestions that genetics and environmental factors play a crucial role in the development of ASD.
Diagnosis (Diagnostic criteria and process, i.e., how it is assessed):
There is no specific process of diagnosing the disorder. However, it is recommended that when a parent suspects their child to have the disorder, a specialist;
Observes the child and asks about the child’s communication skills, social interactions, and behavior development and changes over the time.
Gives the child several tests that cover language, hearing, developmental level, language, and behavioral and social issues.
Presents structured communication and social interactions to the child and scores their performance in each case.
