In a 500-750-word “Letter to the Editor,” propose an initiative for an educational issue that you feel needs to be addressed. Include a plan about how this issue could become an initiative under Arizona law.

Topic: Shortage of Teachers in Arizona
During the start of the academic year 2019, Arizona holds a 21% job vacancy for teachers. At the same time, more than half of the currently hired teachers do not meet Arizona’s certification standards. According to the survey of the Arizona School Personnel Administrators Association, there were 1,442 vacant slots for teachers (Walker, 2019). The shortage of teachers had been a long-standing problem in Arizona despite the state making relatively moderate improvements, the issue is still ongoing.
As reported by the National Education Association, teachers in Arizona make $49,892 annually which has a big difference with the proposed national teacher salary at $61,782 (Zetino, 2019). Arizona remains to be one of the states with the lowest wage for teachers and this is already a crisis to citizens of the state, especially those who are directly affected by the lack of the current system.
The problem has already been a part of Arizona’s culture resulting in an unhealthy cycle severely affecting the educational system in Arizona. The salaries of the teachers are not in par with their necessities as citizens of the state and the time and effort that the occupation requires, which then results in a high turnover rate with a low number of applicants for hire. An inadequate number of teachers in schools and universities for a large number of students will result in increased job demands on teachers who are currently employed, increasing the risk of burnout (Jimerson, 2003).
