Name: Instructor: Date: K-12 School Should Provide Educational Resources for Low-Income Students The K-12 system of education is quite important because it gives students all the necessary skills as they grow. It helps prepare them for tertiary education by inculcating in them some key principles of education and life. The summer is usually a welcome time for virtually everyone, especially students. This is the time to unwind and have some fun out of the school environment, while also enjoying the sun. With all the merrymaking and fun however, comes the other side of things; summer loss. Students often tend to throw all the care to the wind as far as education goes, hence forget much of what they learnt during sessions. The problem is even more pronounced when it comes to students coming from low-income families. Perhaps an explanation to this is that such students usually have little to no educational resources during the summer. They have no books to refer to, nor anywhere to go for educational materials. K-12 school should provide educational resources for low-income students during the summer so that they do not forget what they've learned throughout the school year. It has been more like a historical phenomenon; students tend to perform poorly after they come back from the summer vacation and perhaps not all of them but mostly those students from low-income families. Poverty creates a rather difficult situation for some students (Reed & Bhat). Those from well to do families are somehow lucky because they have learning resources at their disposal. Unless it is their own will not to study during the summer, these students will always be at an advantage once schools reopen. This is contrary when compared to the ones from low income families. This presents a situation whereby, there will be uneven and hence unfair competition in class, as some students will be way ahead of others, due to their privileged life and access to educational materials during the summer. The summer learning loss has been a problem for quite some time, and is still even under research. There are some subjects that need a lot of practice, such as mathematics. It needs regular practice even while the student is at home, so as to perfect. K-12 schools need to provide these resources, so that needy students can have somewhere to go and practice before schools reopen (Amato). Teachers and parents have suggested the possible causes of summer learning loss. Some of them include; Students tend to do well when learning is continuous without breaks. The summer vacation gives the students a break from learning in which they end up forgetting everything. Once they come back, teachers need to take much time reminding them of what they had learned instead of moving ahead to cover the syllabus in time (Lynch). The summer break also is a disadvantage to students with special needs. For example, a student who speaks a different language at home by the time he or she comes back to school he will have struggle to speak fluently in English and reading will be a problem. K-12 schools should provide the educational materials to students from low-income families, so as to create a level playing ground for all students. It is worth noting that the provision of these materials...
