Introduction
Every year, millions of children across the country are identified with special needs and require unique education at school, which is ideal for meeting their needs. The government has been committed to ensuring that all students, regardless of their special conditions, are provided with equal opportunities. There are different laws that have been implemented that are ideal for providing guidelines on how students with disabilities and other special needs may be supported; these include the Education for All Handicapped Children Act and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). These laws outline how individuals with special needs may access public education and the approaches set to ensure that they receive financial assistance, which is needed to find their education and other essential services. This literature is aimed at examining the changes that the current administration is making and how they are impacting special education and the changes that may be expected if IDEA is reauthorized.
Development and implementation of effective and appropriate laws have made it possible for students with disabilities to access appropriate public education that is critical in preparing the learners for future employment and independent living. It is critical to note that Free Appropriate Public Education (FEPA) guarantees all students aged between three and twenty-one years and in need of special education, a program that meets their unique needs. Some of the core principles promoted by special education law include nondiscriminatory evaluation, least restrictive environment, parent participation, and confidentiality (Bateman & Cline, 2016). Changes that should be made on the law should be aimed at promoting the effectiveness of special education based on these critical principles. The current administration has been focused on ensuring that the nature of education provided to students with special needs reflects the values of the United States; this has been achieved by ensuring that the learners are treated equally by giving them the kind of education that meets their needs.
Changes affecting special education
Additionally, the current administration is keen on ensuring that effective changes have been made to ensure that teachers are properly trained and obtain core competencies in their area of specialization. This would make it easy for educators to meet the needs of students with disabilities fully. It is crucial to comprehend that students with special needs exhibit different cognitive, physical, behavioral, and emotional needs. It has been determined that leaders with disabilities record poor performances than their counterparts without disabilities (Kang & Martin, 2018). Often, this achievement gap is witnesses as the students’ transition from elementary to higher levels of education.
