Introduction
The element of race and racial inequality has significantly shaped the history of America. Americans are inspired by the founding of American colonies, that was latter inhibited by the genesis of the United States, an aspect they allege resulted from the quest for religious liberty, freedom and unity, and was latter followed by economic liberty and political unity (Carter, 2016). However, from the start, the American society was founded on brutal forms of inequality, domination, and oppression which included an absolute denial of freedom and liberty for the slaves.
In this case, it is imperative to establish that the historical plight of the Americans presents a classic instance of the happenings when groups of individuals turn out to be less intelligent and weaker in establishing societal values(Carter, 2016). As time went by, the prejudice turned out to be a lasting behavior that was carried on from one generation to the other. The population therefore became resistant to challenges by some of the social movements that instigated laws that were aimed at burning racism against the minorities.
This paper seeks to examine the contributions of this diverse and social issue. In order to establish an understanding of racism, there is a need to determine its place within the society and political systems that perpetuated its growth. The paper will establish its direct effect on the lives of people; in particular, the manner in which racism initiated a hostile environment that diminished the emotional and psychological wellbeing that inhibited the maintenance and development of healthy relationships in the society.
Research Problem
The research problem in this paper is aimed at addressing the issue of widespread societal and institutional changes since the 1960's and their relationship to current racism.
Literature Review
Racism is referred to as a systematic and pervasive assumption of superiority among certain groups, and inferiority of particular groups, based on the concept of cultural differences in norms, values, and behaviors. In this case, Carter (2016) alleges that those who are perceived as inferior are tentatively treated less favorably and differently in several ways. Racism is perpetuated deeply in history, cultural, social and power inequalities in the American society (pp.947). In other words, the element of racism is considered as oppressive since it involves a systematic use of authority and power to treat other groups within the society unjustly, thus creating an environment that sees a group turn out a devalued in the society.
The expression of racism in America involved a straightforward rejection and hostility to minority groups, an aspect that was referred to as an old-fashioned racism. Racism consequently segregated the society, an aspect that turned out to advocate and accept while supremacy during the 1960’s.
