The researchers sought to determine whether alcohol consumption was linked to preterm birth, before and during pregnancy. 91% of the responders consumed alcohol before pregnancy while 20% consumed during pregnancy (Dale, Bakketeig & Magnus, 2016). The researchers used the odds ratio to determine the association between pre-term birth and alcohol consumption during pregnancy, which was 0.81 ((95% confidence interval [CI], 0.70-0.95). The authors stated there was a “statistically significant tendency toward lower risk of preterm birth of pre pregnancy drinking” (Dale, Bakketeig & Magnus, 2016).
For the nondrinkers and drinkers (prepregnancy drinkers and drinkers during pregnancy), here was no increased risk of preterm birth among the drinkers. The risk decreased when there was increased frequency of consumption, but this was not the case for those drinking during pregnancy.
