There’s no denying the fact that climate change has brought various negative impacts and consequences to human welfare. Over the years, it can be observed how the ecosystems of the world have been altered and shifted as a result of climate change. Climate change refers to a global phenomenon as a result of long-term changes brought by the altered weather patterns of Earth’s global, regional, and local climates. During the early 20th century, changes in the climate of the Earth are observed. These changes are mainly contributed to various human activities. Such activities include the burning of fossil fuel which greatly contributes to the trapping of greenhouse gases, thus increasing the average temperature of the Earth’s surface. Another factor that contributes to climate change is the occurrence of natural processes that involve external forcings such as volcanic activity and internal variability such as cyclical ocean patterns (NASA, 2019). This paper aims to explore the impacts and consequences of climate change. The discussion will focus on the climate change impact on the agricultural sector, the occurrence of forest fires, as well as its positive and negative impacts on the economy.
Over the years, the gradual change of the climate has led to several consequences that affect human well-being. One of the economic activities that are greatly implicated with climate change is the agricultural sector. Weather is a crucial factor in which agricultural production mainly depends on. The anticipated effects of climate change have led researchers around the world to develop various models in predicting its effect and how to minimize it. Various statistical models showed the predicted negative impact of climate change on crop yields based on the comparisons made which are obtained from historical data. The key producing regions would be most likely affected by this. A study showed that crop yields such as wheat and barley responded negatively to temperature and precipitation changes (Gammans, Mérel, & Ortiz-Bobea, 2017). Wheat is considered the world’s most widely grown crop and is known to be on par with rice as a source of calories. The findings of this study support the literature on the climate change impact on a plant’s environment as well as the associated physiological processes (Gammans, Mérel, & Ortiz-Bobea, 2017). Sensitivity to the heat of the yield was found due to the negative impact on its growth when the temperature reached above 32°C. The negative effect on growth yield is due to the induced pollen sterility when exposed to that temperature. As compared to freezing, there was a decrease of 2.9% on yield during one-day exposure at this temperature. This is consistent with the findings of a meta-analysis concerning the linkages of wheat development to temperature exposure. Temperature exposure was done to various crops such as winter wheat, winter market, and spring barely in which results showed negative effects of climate change.
