Research Paper Instructions:

Submit your research question here. Write one paragraph describing your research question, why you are interested in this question and point to some of the existing research regarding this topic -- approximately 250 words. Also provide 2 citations in APA style: 1 for a book, and 1 for a news article OR journal article.Three arguments:
1) The drivers of changes in information policies and information politicsA number of factors shape and drive information policies. Information policies are law, regulationsor acts of government related to access data, access to government reports, privacy of personalhealth information, surveillance by government actors, copyright and trademark issues, etc… Now,what affects how these things take shape? One factor may be culture, another factor may bepolitical, and yet another factor may be technological. Perhaps you may look into how politicalactivity has shaped new government surveillance practices or how culture affects data privacypolicies. These are more specific questions within this broad topic.2) How social media affects social or psychological norms/behaviorSocial media are new online tools that probably have an impact on a number of social andpsychological norms. For example, in the social media environment people may share more personalinformation than they would in other environments. Social media may have other effects, such as onhow people develop relationships or the level of happiness. For example, the use of social mediamay be increasing people's happiness. Another example is having reliable information. Perhapssocial media may be increase how knowledgeable people are about news and the world aroundthem. These are the types of questions you may investigate within this topic.3) How new technologies may be used to predict human behaviorThere are a number of new technologies that are used to predict specific human behavior or largersocial outcomes. For example, Google attempted a technology/procedure to predict flu outbreaksbased on search queries. Did this work well? Why, or why not? Other technologies may be used topredict the market (e.g. prices of commodities, securities), wars, or the next thing you may want topurchase. This type of technology often uses “data mining” procedures, where previous patternsfrom a large number of data (“big data”) can be used to predict future outcomes or preferences.Choose a particular technology or sets of technologies you are interested in and look into itsstructure, the cases in which it has succeeded, the cases in which it has failed, and how it may beimproved.

Example of Fan: Big data technologies and businessesThis annotated bibliography is in reference to my research question: “How are big data and predictivetechnologies used in businesses?” This research is interesting and important because many businesses areadopting “big data” and “predictive” technologies. Big data and predictive technologies are technologies thatuse “analytics” software to discover patterns about large amounts of data about customers and purchases. With these technologies, businesses can make better decisions about which new products to develop, or whichproducts each customer is interested in. These technologies also allow businesses to provide “recommendersystems”, where businesses can recommend certain items to customers based on their previous purchases. There are many kinds of predictive big data technologies available, and there are many benefits of thesetechnologies for businesses. In this annotated bibliography, I identify papers that summarize some keytechnologies used in this area, what these technologies are capable of doing, and the impact thesetechnologies can have on businesses. Also, I identify some resources that point to problems these technologiescan pose for organizational learning and employee training.
Scholarly Articles:• Bucur, C. (2015). Using Big Data for Intelligent Businesses. Proceedings of the ScientificConference AFASES, 2, 605–612.This article presents an overview of the technologies that are called “big data”. The article alsodiscusses “data warehouses” and how they are used to store the big data. The article identifies sourcesof big data and challenges with using big data in businesses. I thought this article was useful because itprovided a general overview of the technology, with some of the benefits and challenges. For example, the benefits included: behavioral analytics, which can be used to learn about specific people;improvement of performances, which happens because the business can “analyze companies entiredata”. Other benefits include “fraud detection” and “monetization of data”. The article finds that “themost important criteria in acquiring a data and analytics solution are integration into existinginfrastructure” which I think suggests that businesses need to have proper infrastructure first beforeacquiring big data technologies.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
Bucur, C. (2015). Using Big Data for Intelligent Businesses. Proceedings of the Scientific
Conference AFASES, 2, 605–612.
This article reviews how big data has changed the way organisations use “data infrastructures” and “data analytics software”. It delves deeper into current “trends” and “technologies” that will likely define the “future of big data computing”. Besides, the article has presented a general architecture describing the “transformation of data analytics” from the “traditional data warehouses”. Lastly, the article explores “challenges” that organisations face in implementing big data applications and the emerging organizational perspectives. I felt this article will be important to my research as it covers key concepts such as “big data”, “Data analytics software”, “big data computing trends and technologies”, “Architectures and evolution of big data” as well as organizational challenges a...
