The cultivation model postulated by Gerbner intended to investigate the impact of television on the observers. The theory states that television delineates societal responsibilities, regulates human conduct, and regiments people. Also, the electronic media gadgets influence people to develop phobia when they view vicious events happening in different parts of the world. The impacts can either be universal view of the ecosphere or particular assertiveness towards ones surrounding (Gandy, 2014).
Aims of the Theory
The theory aimed at determining the impacts of lengthy television watching on the adverse individual feelings of the viewer. The effect of long viewing of violence-related programs on television on the viewer’s perception on particular people was also another purpose of the study. Gerbner investigated the impact of television viewing on people’s social behaviors (Gandy, 2014).
Importance of the Goal
The study is significant in determining the effect of watching particular types of television violence on the viewers’ attitudes. It focuses on a certain kind of violence rather than generalization. In addition, the study surveys violence in both imagery and non-imagery organization. It enables one to compare the effect of watching a fiction program to viewing a real show (Gandy, 2014).
Application of the Theory
The theory works very well in terrorism prone countries where television is the most persuasive system of public broadcasting. Also, it is useful in situations where the television is used to model the perspectives and principles of the people. The context should also involve development of substitute truth rather than consideration of veracity. In addition, the circumstance should involve fortification of ethics and principle (Gandy, 2014).
However, the theory cannot be applied in cases where a few people use television, or where the audiences watch different programs. The use of television to shape attitude and perceptions is limited in people with previous exposure to violent act. In addition, it is less applicable where the mass media is used to encourage ferocity. The theory is not practical in societies where television is not used at all (Gandy, 2014).
People express different perspectives after viewing a television show according to this theory. In addition, frequent exposure to violent television shows leads to behavior and attitude changes. People who watch ferocity news for long express marked attitude change that reflect the fact viewed on the television, and view the world as a risky place to live (Mosharafa, 2015).
The cruel world disorder episode is the main phenomenon discussed by Gerbner’s. The syndrome explains how heavy television audiences develop a negative perception contrary to the real life situation. Such viewers become suspicious of the environment they reside, and express a lot of fear. The theory shows a direct relationship between the duration spend in viewing a television production, and the phobia expressed by the audience (Mosharafa, 2015).
The disorder develops gradually in people and become more pronounced with time. The theory disregards the impact of technological changes on the culti...
