Over the past two decades there has been tremendous growth in the international trade globally. As a result, supply chains have also progressively become even more complex which involves production processes that are also increasingly becoming geographically fragmented. Due to this rampant development in the international trade; this stimulated the demand for the supporting infrastructure as well as logistics activities. Due to these developments there has been high demand for a reliable mode of transportation that would make this kind of trade even much better. International trades have also necessitated the need for reliable and efficient intermodal system to enable the ports to operate successfully and efficiently. The success of the ports will be measured on how effective and efficient cargos are transferred between the trucks, rails and ship. The movement should be flawless. However, being an integral part of the transportation industry, ports face numerous challenges. Therefore, as the major link in the intermodal system, ports must take continuous measures to ensure that their partners. However, in the recent past the intermodal transportation sector has been experiencing some challenges. Among the challenges that the sector has been experiencing include security issues. The actions that have been taken to ensure that there is improved security in these ports have also come with its own challenges. For instance, improvement in security at different ports across the world have negatively impacted on throughput, increase in costs, and also reduction in the quality of operations.
This paper explores some of the impact of security on the intermodal transportation.
Intermodal Transportation Business
The modern business’ demand for better transportation services that are able to lower the involved costs, faster transit times, and improved reliability. Due to this demand from businesses, transportation systems need to be competitive as well. This is not a trend in the transportation industry but an objective. To achieve this goal, all the involved players must play their roles effectively to offer businesses (both importers and exporters) more reliable services. This is something that is being witnessed daily in most of the major ports across the world where those who are involved in port activities are working closer to meet the needs of businesses in both local and international markets. As a key link in the intermodal chain, ports have taken a series of measures to improve the services offered in the entire system. All the involved players in the industry continue to take firms actions to meet the dynamic needs of modern businesses. The ports’ network systems (the railways and trucking companies) serving the ports have played a major role in improving the services and cutting down the costs. Additionally, the ports’ network systems have made inroads to major cities across the world (Yilmazel & Asyali, 2005, October).
