Different kinds of cargoes could be accepted for air shipment for instance animals, oversized goods, urgent/perishable goods, human remains, humid/wet cargo, human organs and blood among other cargoes. Such cargoes call for special shipment conditions. Three of the 9 special cargo categories are as follows: perishable goods; dangerous goods; and live animals.
Perishable Goods
These include the goods whose availability or initial state could be deteriorated under the influence of humidity or temperature alterations or delay in shipment. Examples of perishable cargo are as follows: magazines and newspapers; preserved blood, biological and medical preparations, serum, frozen embryos and live human organs; live plants, seeds, tubers, saplings and flowers. Others include products after processing such as canned goods, frozen fruits and vegetables, grease, oil, dairy produce, cheese and meat produce; original meat products such as smoked or chilled meat of animals and birds, seafood, fish and eggs including caviar and incubatory eggs; and plants such as citrus plants, berries, fruits and vegetables (Domodedovo Cargo, 2015). Time-sensitive techniques and special methods should be used to handle perishable cargo since they are subject to decomposition, deterioration or decay. Whenever an airline company has perishable goods to handle, it is important for them to create a special cargo-handling plan. This would generally include an exhaustive analysis of government requirements at the destination market in order to decrease risk and delay (Domodedovo Cargo, 2015).
Dangerous Goods
These are special cargoes containing substances or articles which could actually be dangerous for the health of people as well as property during air travel. They also pose a considerable risk to safety whenever they are transported by air. ICAO’s “Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air” provides a listing of danger levels of various goods plus their names. IATA grouped dangerous cargoes into 9 classes.
