Construction of Progressive Field in Cleveland
Introduction
Some infrastructural undertakings usually set out to completely alter the way of life of a given locality, place or city. The changes can either be positive or negative, although in most cases, such things aim at changing life for the better. Constructed during the early ‘90s in Cleveland, Ohio, United States, Progressive Field serves as a home to Cleveland Indians, a baseball team that competes in Major League Baseball. The field is quite synonymous with the team. Most franchises in the American Major League Sports have always given priority and exceptional attention to their fields.
Almost all of them are quite exquisite, with their customized designs and state of the art finishing. The Progressive Field is no different. Its construction was a great lesson not only just for its stunning design but also for the ingenious manner in which funds were sourced for it. It is a typical example of a retro park, as its design fits onto the already existing grid lines of the city, whether its irregular or not. The other characteristic of a retro park is the open nature of its top, which allows it to open into the sky above.
Construction of this ballpark was influenced by various factors, one of them being the need by Cleveland Indians to have its stadium that could be filled up during their baseball games. The funding towards the construction of the stadium was on the other hand generated from a combination of both private and public support including the rolled out 15-year Cuyahoga sin tax. Subsequently, the stadium has demonstrated to have a lot of significance not only to the Indians franchise in terms of gate collection revenue but also to the people of Cleveland since they can now enjoy some social amenities in the stadium including Kids Clubhouse for children to play (Farkas, 2019).
The Need to Construct Progressive Field
Before the construction of the Progressive Field, Cleveland Indians used to share Cleveland Stadium with a National Football League side Cleveland Browns. However, the capacity, design, and location of the stadium did not favor the baseball team. For instance, Cleveland Stadium, which is an 80,000-capacity arena, could hardly be filled during the Cleveland Indians games. The few supporters who used to avail themselves for the Indians' games were always swallowed by the stadium thus rendering their presence in the stadium ineffective during the Indians baseball games. Their cheers for their team always seemed to be swallowed by the size of the arena. One can only imagine being in a stadium which kills all the life and excitement out of the fans.
Secondly, Cleveland Stadium or Cleveland Municipal Stadium as it is cited in other sources is located next to Lake Erie, an environment that was away from people and thus could not attract large numbers of supporters to the game hence the need to construct a new stadium in the middle of downtown where Progressive Field is situated today (Kent & Sheridan, 2011).
