In business organizations just like in any other organization, there is bound to be channels of circulating information and knowledge. Knowledge exists in two broad categories. These are; the tacit and explicit knowledge. Organizations have turned to new technologies such as wikis and blogs to improve identification, categorization and sharing of knowledge. This paper analyses the difference between tacit and explicit knowledge. It also gives insight in to the different ways in which organizations utilize the new technologies such as blogs and wikis to identify categorize and share knowledge. This paper also analyses the benefits of those new technologies.
Tacit versus explicit knowledge
Explicit knowledge is the kind of knowledge that is precisely systematic. It is a formal kind of knowledge which is easy to share and even store. This is because; it is recorded for instance in books or tapes. This kind of knowledge is easily communicated. It is usually documented and therefore it is easy to retrieve it for reference in the future. The explicit knowledge is expressed and recorded in different ways. For instance, mathematical codes could be used in expression and recording. Musical notations as well as numbers could also be used.
Tacit knowledge on the other hand is the kind of knowledge that is informally oriented. It does not follow a systematic manner. This kind of knowledge is very much personal and it may be very difficult to share this kind of knowledge. This is because; tacit knowledge is not easily expressed. Some aspects of tacit knowledge may be difficult to capture. The aspects that may completely not be captured remain in the senses of the person having them. Beck, Pahlke & Seebach (2014)clarify that; this complication of the tacit knowledge call for seeking ways of making the aspects which are easy to capture in the tacit knowledge, to take the form of explicit knowledge so that they can be shared.
