Since its founding in 1920, the National Football League (NFL) has had many both internal and external factors that affect how it operates. The National Football League has undergone many changes from its change in the name to even the core principles of operation. Many of these factors can be categorized according to their effects under the following:
Technology
One of the factors that had the most significant effect is technology. Though technological enhancements has often been at the heart of issues surrounding musical authenticity and veracity, whether applied to the individual’s health or equipment characteristics, it has also played various controversial roles within sports culture (McLeod, 2011) There are five major aspects in which technology has changed the NFL. First is the video score board; they show live scores for the players and the players can easily keep track of how far or close they are from winning or otherwise. Second, playing surfaces were now artificially reproduced. They are better than traditional grass in that they do not wear off easily like grass. Players have also declared that they are able to move faster. Third, was the introduction of helmets that could receive audio signals. Coaches could now use them to communicate with players. This is important as the defensive will not overhear the plans of the other team. Fourth, technology also plays a role in safety concerns. For example, the growing concern regarding concussions in contact sports will surely lead helmet manufacturers to apply every available technology to radically improve the treatment of sport-related injuries and will surely find new ways to apply technology in caring for athletes. Surgeons already use revolutionary innovations in performing knee and hip replacements and arthroscopic surgery has greatly reduce recovery time and enhanced prospects for returning to competition after an injury (Baker & Esherick, 2013).
Innovation
As sports have grown increasingly more competitive, the need for better equipment, athletic health care and instruction has become concomitantly more important. (McLeod, 2011). Innovations in sports are aimed at aiding the achievement of better results. In addition to revolutionizing the equipment, health and training of athletes, innovations in technology have also affected the officiating and regulation of many sports. Instant video replay, for example, is a regular tool used in NFL football and NHL hockey to determine the accuracy of an official’s on-field decision. (McLeod, 2011...
