MEMORANDUM
To: Project team members
From: Phil Jenkins, Project team leader
Date: 11/09/2016
Re: The human resource project
This memorandum describes the budget situation of the human resource (HR) project being conducted at the organization currently. A number of recommendations are made that can help improve the performance of a team member in the project who is underperforming. Lastly, a plan of action for getting this project back on track is organized and a new critical path is developed.
Project’s budget situation
The team is carrying out a human resource project that seeks to revamp the benefits and compensation package of employees at the company. However, this project is currently six weeks off track. Moreover, the project is facing a serious financial challenge since the budget for the project has in fact been depleted faster than initially anticipated.
Recommendation for improving an underperforming team member
There is a key project team member who is always late with her deadlines and her performance has failed to meet expectations. In other words, she has been underperforming consistently. This team member is threatening the project’s health and the project manager has to act promptly in order to limit the damage that the team member’s underperformance might inflict (Kerzner & Saladis, 2011). There are three ways of improving the performance of a team member who is underperforming. These include the following:
Create a performance improvement plan and monitor it. The job of the project manager is to attain the objectives of the project. For the project manager to do this, every member of the team has to meet theirs (Terzieva & Morabito, 2016). The underperforming team member and the project manager have to agree to measurable and specific performance improvements. The project manager should establish clear expectations with the team member and tell her what he expects her to do. The project manager will need to ensure that both he and the underperforming team member know the performance improvement metrics in both time as well as substance (Besteiro, Souza & Novaski, 2015). The project manager and the team member should both agree that the project manager’s expectations are fair and logical. The project manager should establish regular checkpoints on the set expectations. People in general cannot rectify their course unless they are able to know when they are astray or off track (Nguyen, 2016). Milestones would be created for the team member and if the individual reaches those milestones, she would be praised. The project manager will also need to coach and mentor the underperforming team member. The project manager should understand what is going on, why the performance of this individual is poor, and then provide her with reasonable guidance and help to attain the expectations and goals which both the team member and the project manager have agreed are logical and reasonable.
The project manager would monitor the progress of the team member and measure it against the improvement plan. It would important that the project manager provides encouragement and acknowledges...
