How can your organization's (Target) logistical system be improved?
Target Corporation can improve its logistics system by improving its layout warehouse designs such that they use less costs in terms of cargo storage, packaging, transportation and distribution. The corporation should do an analysis of the time used in loading and uploading so that the best layout to reduce this time is designed. Improving the storage system is also of important so that there is prevention of damage and the quality is secured. Items should be stored in terms of similar shapes and they should be in standing positions for better storage. They should also be put in hand-reaching range improving the loading and uploading process. The quality of the products can also be improved by putting the same item in one location so that it makes it easier to check the items and reducing the logistics time (Rowley, 2009). There should also be an improvement in the storage management so as to prevent making of sales of low quality products.
For the company to improve its logistics on the internet, it needs to use the latest integrated logistics tools instead of being stuck with software that limits productivity and flexibility. The company can also reduce the operational logistic costs such as distribution labor costs by implementing warehouse management and use of newer technology such as pick face slotting, enhanced task management so as improve labor productivity. Reduction of administrative costs especially those associated with customer service and other task impacted by logistic systems is another way of improving the logistic system (NTE, 2011). Other costs that can be reduced include inventory carrying costs and a reduction of the transportation expenditure by reducing the freight bills.
