Information systems govern all communications within an organization. An information system comprises of hardware, software and people working together as a system to collect, organize, distribute, store and communicate information. Information systems management ensures that the right planning and implementation of technology is carried out in order to facilitate efficient information operations in an organization (McNurlin, Sprague & Bui, 1989). International companies with branches and sub-branches all over the world rely on well integrated systems to manage all of their information. Poor information systems management may lead to losses and even collapse of an organization.
In the shipping and logistics industry, shipping lines may seem like they work independently but this is not the case. In the container shipping segment of logistics, there exists systems that work hand in hand to track vessels, shipping routes, and all the containers that have ever been manufactured and used to transport goods all over the world. Since there are millions of containers being controlled by different shipping lines all over the world, a tracking system monitoring all these units exists. This tracking system is highly efficient (Laudon & Laudon, 2004).
The Mediterranean Shipping Company is a good example of an organization in the logistics industry that has very effective information systems. Since it is a diverse company dealing with transport of goods and people, we will focus on the container shipping sector. All information about every container owned is located in one place that is easily accessed over their website. Upon entering a container number, results showing its current location, its status (whether empty or full), its last port of loading and its expected port of discharge are made available.
