Flaws in Argument
There is growing interest and debate on the effectiveness of gun control based on recent high profile mass shooting incidents. Thus, it is no surprise that the debate on the regulation and possession of firearms as enshrined in the Second Amendment is increasingly polarized Supporters and opponents of stricter gun control use different persuasive strategies to argue their case on different aspects of gun control laws. In a paper by DeGrazia (2014), the researcher argues the case for moderate gun control, which improves public safety and does not conflict with gun rights The availability of more guns in a population is linked to the more murders, accidental killings and suicides, and this has necessitated some forms of gun control laws to promote public safety (DeGrazia, 2014). While the researcher challenges arguments on moderate gun control and offers reasons for supporting changes to adopt moderate gun control, he also ignores conflicting evidence. The flows in the argument made are linked to false dilemma (dichotomy), appeals to emotions and makes a false analogy between driving and owning guns.
The False Dilemma/False Dichotomy
The argument that moderate gun control is required to keep people safer in homes is linked to data on the rates for those with guns, but the assumption is that people will only be safer with fewer weapons. This argument is flawed as it focuses on only having two choices two either have no guns and be safe or have guns and be less safe.
