Fatigue remains a primary safety concern in the aviation industry, but it can be addressed appropriately without additional costs to the company. The main cause of fatigue among workers in the airline industry is prolonged working hours and, therefore, less sleep. The airline management should schedule working hours in a manner that offers time off to provide employees with enough opportunity to get restorative sleep. This means that employees’ schedules should be organized in a way that some are working while others are resting, and then they interchange without overworking any group. The management should also educate the employees on the dangers of fatigue to ensure personal responsibility. The working environment should offer a conducive place to sleep when necessary. In addition, employees should be given time to exercise, balanced diet, drink plenty of liquids, and learn to countercheck work to avoid fatigue-related errors (Salas, Jentsch & Maurino, 2010).
An internal hazard reporting and distributing system is crucial to ensuring safety within the aviation industry. An efficient internal hazard reporting and distribution program should have a mechanism that ensures hazard communication is carried out at all levels of the organization. The senior management should define requirements that support active hazard reporting by registering crucial safety data, and develops measures to deal with the consequences of these hazards. Realistic rules regarding hazards should be enacted, and employees should be informed of possible sources of damage. The management should also promote a program that ensures checks and balances to make sure that the reporters of hazards are confident that such reporting will be taken as valuable information to address safety and not face any punitive measures. Employees should also be trained to identify and report hazards, as well as realize the consequences of hazards in line with the delivery of services. Poor training of the employees is one of the causes of failure of these in-house programs (Müller, Wittmer & Drax, 2014, p. 161).
