Different people start businesses for different reasons. Some do it to pursue a passion, make a living, or to express themselves. Regardless of the reason, businesses are set up to fill an existing market gap; to supply for the demand that is either neglected or inadequately supplied (Hefer, Cant, & Wiid, 2015). For instance, one might open a shop at a major transportation hub to provide snacks and drinks for the travelers. Likewise, a hotel can be opened in a tourist area to provide accommodation for the tourists. The provision of products and services to satisfy a certain need or demand has come to be accepted as usual business. Provision of some intangible services such as relief from anger may, therefore, be taken by many people as an unusual business. However, regardless of how unusual it might sound, it is actually a viable business idea. We all get angry at times. Injustice, rudeness, embarrassment, pain, hunger, tiredness, frustration, and many other reasons have the potential to make a person angry. Just like people are made angry by different reasons, they behave differently when angry. Some get into uncontrolled eating while others cry to let it go. There is also a pocket of the population that shout, throw or smash things when angry. Actually, slamming pillows against the wall or hitting dolls were some of the strategies used in anger management in the 1970s. The activities were meant to help the person get in touch with their anger and vent it out. Anger Room was created for this group of people and for the same reasons. It enables one to smash their anger away. It allows one to escape the world that expects them to hold it all together and get the freedom to let it all loose, a smash at a time.
Anger Room is a facility in Dallas, Texas, that rents out rooms filled with common objects for people to destroy at a fee as a way of letting out their anger. They are allowed to break the things as a form of fun, love or anger therapy in a safe environment. The rooms can be designed to resemble various spaces such as living area, kitchen, or office space. Breakable items such as televisions, dishes, vases, and wine bottles are some of the things found in the rooms. It was founded by Donna Alexander in 2008. The establishment acknowledges the need for human beings to lash out at times. They also acknowledge that lashing out in the normal everyday environment can result in injury to either the angry person or other parties as well as destruction of property. While growing up in Chicago, Alexander acknowledges that she witnessed some of her friends go to jail for slashing tires and destroying property out of anger. To help prevent more of her friends from jail, she decided to establish a place they could use to cool off their anger. Her first establishment was in her garage, and her friends were the first clients. As the word spread, more people started using the facility at five bucks for every session. She used this initial stage as a pilot. The prices were later adjusted. In 2011, she had to look for a bigger space. Most people visit the Anger Room due to home-related issues and stress from work (Jaramillo, 2016).
