Animal Biology: The Antelopes, Ecological Role They Play

Research Paper Instructions:

Your assignment is to write a two page paper concerning two aspects of animal biology. You may choose either a specific animal or group of animals, living or extinct.
The first aspect I want you to cover is the natural history of the animal or group. This is designed to allow you to delve deep into the ecology of the organism(s) and have a greater appreciation for the unique adaptations that animals have and how they are able to survive and thrive in their environment.
The second aspect may be chosen from the list below. This part of the paper is designed to allow you to see how current research is shaping our understanding of the animal(s) and/or the impact we as humans are having on their survival as well as their potential to deal with these threats. As such, I want your citations for this part of the paper to be as recent as possible (hopefully within the last three years or so). Science is always increasing our knowledge and understanding of the world and it is important to find the most recent information possible
1) evolution and adaptation
2) extinction
3) the effect of climate change
4) introduced/invasive species
5) the ecological role they play in their community (e.g., keystone or indicator species)
6) Conservation
7) * there may be some other aspect of interest that is not listed here
You will find at least two citable sources from the scientific literature and summarize, in your own words, what you learned. The paper will be at least 2 pages single spaced. It will have a cover page, two (minimum) pages of text, and a separate ‘literature cited' page in the back (see format of citations below). I will provide a separate example of the format I want you to follow.
There are a variety of sources you may use. Books are fine for background information such as geographic distribution and reproduction, for example. Periodic literature (peer reviewed journals or magazines) are more useful for recent information such as habitat destruction, disease, impacts of climate change, etc. The more recent the information the better.
Internet sites WILL NOT be acceptable as a reference for your paper (e.g. Wikipedia). If I see a web address ANYWHERE in your literature citations, you will be docked points. You may use the internet to lead you to appropriate articles, and in fact that is the easiest way to gain access to articles (via the SLCC Elie web page databases) but ALWAYS CITE THE ARTICLE!!! NEVER CITE THE WEB PAGE!!!
This research paper is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of your topic, but should be thorough enough to inform a non-expert about the general knowledge (or lack of knowledge) about the topic. You are expected to write clearly and concisely using proper grammar and punctuation. Stick to the facts and do not try to be entertaining. This is a review of scientific information, not an argument or explanation of why you find the topic interesting. Two pages of text is not a lot of space to write in so write well!
The final draft is due in class on April 7 , 2017. If you turn in your paper late, you will lose 20% off your earned score for every class period past the due date. If you want to turn the paper in early to have me make editorial corrections, I will allow you to do that one time, but you need to give me enough time before the deadline to make those edits and get it back to you so you can rewrite and turn it in on time.

CITATIONS
The citations of your source articles will include:
The authors name(s)
The title of the article
The name of the magazine/journal
The volume #, issue #, and pages of the article

Your 'literature cited' page is a separate page at the back of your paper. If you do not provide all the information listed above for all your citations, you will be docked points.
FORMAT
I am providing you with an example format that you can use OR follow APA format (http://www(dot)apastyle(dot)org/). If you do not follow one of the two formats, you will be docked points.
Example Topics:
- natural history
- evolution and adaptation
- extinction
- the effect of climate change
- introduced/invasive species
- the ecological role they play in their community
- disease/parasitism
- *economic impacts
- domestication/artificial selection
- coevolution
- diversity
- conservation

The Antelopes
Ecology shapes the way the species of animals survive and how they meet their survival needs. The antelope is one of the world’s most interesting animals characterized with what many people refer to as weak body structure but strong enough to propel it in the fastest manner possible. The antelopes belong to the Bovidae family or what most people refer to as the old world species that is not in the group of the domesticated animals such as cattle, goat, sheep and many other such domesticated animals (Burgman, 2015). This family of animals are indigenous to Africa and Eurasia. Some scientist argue that the species is native to the Antarctic regions but with the evolving human world several species have been transferred to other regions across the world. Therefore, there is no specific region that can claim to have a full history of the antelopes.
The Bovidae family has over 91 species of animals with over 30 genera (Jakob & Mallon 2016). However, the system of classification is not uniformly accepted because in the current world faced with a lot of competition cases of cross breeding are very high making it difficult to come up with one system of classifying the Bovidae family. With the increased transfer of animals to different areas it has also become difficult to define the ideal habitat for this species. However, ecologist argue that the savannah habitat in the African region still remains to be the most appropriate habitat for the antelopes. The savannah region is highly characterized by grass which thrives in an environment of hot wet season for 4-8 months and a cool dry season for the rest of the year. These regions are characterized by low amounts of rainfall but that are low enough to allow the grass to grow for the survival of the animals. Other species live in the forests, woodlands and others on the plains. Some of them tend to migrate in groups in such of grass and they move with seasons.
The antelopes have very long slender legs but that are very strong. These legs are meant to help them survive in their natural habitat. The strength of the legs helps the animals to reach tall acacia trees for their survival especially during the dry season. Some of them can stand on their limbs for long hours without stressing. The long legs also help them to run very fast. This is very important particularly in helping them escape their predators such as lions, tigers and cheetahs which are comparatively faster just like them. They have long ears that are protruding to the outside. These ears are ever standing to help them detect any noise or any approaching danger. The antelopes graze in groups and they have their ears high and they are very sensitive, any slight movement from any approaching predators is detected and a response is triggered immediately. Different types of antelopes have different body structures. However, the most common body structure is the slender streamlined body that helps the animals to run fast in the savanna region. The body weight is light to help the animals penetrate faster and run faster through the thorny savanna when they are approached by predators. Another important adaptive feature of the antelopes in the natu...
