We have been focusing upon how those in terrorist leadership positions communicate their agenda to those within their organizations, their affiliates, and to the world at large. Focusing upon Osama bin Laden, how would you compare and contrast his ability to communicate and exert influence upon these various audiences from the years preceding 9/11 until his death?

During the 90s, terrorist groups used traditional means of communications such as faxes, Journal interviews, and storytelling to communicate with their members and future converts. During the late 90s, they shifted the ways of communication due to technological advancements and the rise of Al Jazeera television network which became Al-Qaeda's channel of communication to the Muslim community and provided CNN with recorded tapes. However, with the recent advancements in technology, Al-Qaeda has also not been left out in utilizing the modern channels of communication.
Today, terrorist groups are exploiting and taking advantage of the modern ways of communication such as social media to spread their messages as well as get new converts. The modern terrorists are not recording their messages and distributing them to news agencies or waiting for interviews. With the modern technology, all the terrorists need is a smartphone, and they can spread their propagandas across the world. The social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter are being exploited by terrorists like the normal citizens do for their conveniences. With just a click of a button, the terrorists can spread their messages to their followers and new ones. All of the terrorist organizations across the world have a common aspect, closeness. Twitter is the most favorite social media platform for terrorists to communicate with their followers (Gabriel, 2014).
Additionally, the terrorists are taking advantage of the most recent communication channels such WhatsApp and iMessages that allow encrypted communications. These channels do not allow the authorities to see the messages that are being sent; they allow them to be erased immediately before they get to third parties. Despite the terrorists taking advantage of the social media, they do not stop there. Since the online communication platform has become cheaper and faster, they have built their customized communication tools such as the encrypted email (Mujahedeen Secrets) and a mobile communication app (Tashfeer Al-Jawwal). They have also created an Android-based news app (Alemarah) (Reisinger, 2016).
Psychological and behavioral factors within al Qaeda leadership and affiliate groups
