The documentary The Mayflower Pilgrims: Behind the Myth is eye-opening and insightful. Watching it made me reflect widely on pilgrimages, their meanings, religion and the history of the times. The pilgrimage journey in the documentary is a journey of purity that defined the discovery of a new world, America (Universal Documentaries HD, 2017). The first thing that surprised me in the documentary was the process of preparing for the pilgrimage. The genesis of the journey began when William Bradford was sick, aged twelve years. Bradford's severe illness made him bedridden and turn to Bible, both for consolation and to understand it. His closeness to the Bible revealed the rot in congregations that led the masses in the wrong direction (Universal Documentaries HD, 2017).
The second issue that surprised me was Bradford and the pilgrimage moving to Holland in search of religious freedom. Bradford's closeness to the Bible made him discover that God is present everywhere and not in the church only. This means God would be with them in Holland (Smith, n.d).
