The article titled World city formation: an agenda for research and action was written by John Friedmann and Goetz Wolff in 1982. The paper is quite comprehensive in its description and outlook of world cities. As they indicate, the article focuses on “the principal urban regions” which are “dominant in the hierarchy, in which most of the world’s active capital is concentrated.” These cities control a big portion of the world’s capital, are large in size, grow and expand at a fast rate, and also have very large populations.
The authors present their argument in a clear and concise manner. “Our basic argument is that the character of the urbanizing processes – economic, social, and spatial – which define life in these “cities” reflect, to a considerable extent, the mode of their integration into the world economy” (17).
