“None” on the Rise
The report dubbed “None” on the Rise by Pew Research enlightens about Americans' views concerning not only religion but also spirituality. In general, the report illustrates that religiosity in the United States is decreasing, whereas the degree to which people uphold spirituality remains significant. The research focuses on various variables, which help understand citizens and residents' perceptions concerning variables. In particular, the evaluation focuses on religious identity with which people associate, frequency of attending religious gatherings/places of worship, feeling of connection to a given deity/force of nature, frequency of praying, interest in searching for the right religion, and importance of religious institution on community.
In regards to religious identity, there is an increasing rate at which people dissociate from all religions. The case applies not only to Christianity, but all religious institutions, including Islam and Buddhism. According to Pew Research, "one-fifth of the U.S. public – and a third of adults under 30 – are religiously unaffiliated today, the highest percentages ever in Pew Research Center polling” (Funk and Smith 9). The statement infers that there is a growing number of people who prefer to remain unaffiliated with any religious group. Nevertheless, the preference of lacking a given religious identity does not necessarily mean that there is a growing number of individuals who do not believe in the existence of God. Therefore, the number of people who are unaffiliated with any religion is greater than that of those who consider themselves as either atheists or agnostics.
