Reaction Paper Instructions:

In the summary section, you should describe the purpose of the article (i.e., the main question that the authors were addressing), briefly describe the methods the authors used to address their question, and summarize the results and conclusions. The Halo Effect: Evidence for Unconscious Alteration of Judgments
The article of 1977 by Richard Nisbett and Timothy Wilson came about due to halo effect phenomena. With it in mind, the two sought to investigate whether people knew that the halo effect affected their evaluations. The authors believed that people did not know mental processes that influence judgment, deduction, and the creation of complicated social behavior; thus, the need for the study (Nisbett & Timothy 251).
Nisbett and Wilson’s article researched 118 subjects from the University of Michigan who were in the introductory psychology class. The residents got to see two interviews with a native French-speaking Belgian instructor who had an accent. One of the interviews showed him answering questions by presenting himself as likable. In the other, he appeared unlikable and cold. The participants were then asked to score the tutor in terms of attractiveness, mannerism, and his accent (Nisbett & Timothy 252).
The results showed that the respondents were oblivious of the sway global evaluations had on their conclusions. According to a majority of them, their liking for the teacher did not influence their scores of his attributes. Also, the respondents believed that their opinions decreased or increased their licking of the instructor depending on the video they saw (Nisbett & Timothy 254-55). Nonetheless, it was not until further prying that the respondents discovered that global evaluations such as their first impression of the instructor made them like him, while to others, disliking his accent made them hate him more.
