The August 1987 article by Joseph Forgas and Gordon Bower is an investigative study. They aimed to establish the way a person’s mood influences impression-formation judgments, how learning and attention of some things affect people’s perception, and the relationship between biases in judgment and memory by people (Forgas & Gordon 54). The two authors came up with these questions following the theories of mood effects on cognition.
Joseph and Gordon utilized experiments as their method of research. The research used fifty-two respondents who were undergraduate students. The respondents first underwent a mood manipulation experiment where they filled in a questionnaire and got fake results aimed at altering their moods either positively or negatively. They then underwent a person-perception test where they got information about different people with each containing positive, negative, and neutral details about them. They were then to make a judgment by answering the above questions (Forgas & Gordon 54-55).
The results of the experiment showed that one mood manipulation was effective as the respondents tended to associate with either positive or negative moods as per the manipulation technique. Two, the state of mood a respondent was in affected the time they took to read about the experimental people. Respondents in a good mood responded faster, while those who were sad took more time (Forgas & Gordon 56).
