False Consensus Effect
Ross, Greene, and House, in their article “The “False Consensus Effect”: An Egocentric Bias in Social Perception and Attribution Processes,” analyzed the false consensus effect perceived by social observers, especially concerning the commonness of specific responses. Ross, Greene, and House acknowledge that many people are likely to perceive a false consensus because they want to see their personal opinions and choices as prevalent in any particular circumstance while viewing other different opinions as uncommon. The researchers' main idea is that most people assume that their own opinions and choices are widely shared and those with opposing opinions are odd and as such, this oddness tells more about the person’s characteristics and way of life.
To conduct this analysis, the researchers collected evidence from four studies. The first study used questionnaires to collect information from participants. The participants were given four hypothetical stories and were asked to respond. The results revealed that participants who responded by providing a particular behavioral choice believed that this choice would also be selected by most people, making their choice the most likely choice for people in general. Further, the results indicated that these people would not use extreme ratings while describing the traits of people who choose that particular response (283). The second study sought to measure the likelihood that the participants would overestimate how widely they shared their characteristics with other people, based on the commonness of their responses.
