Response to the Move by the State Set to Pay College for Prison Courses
Correctional facilities play a major role in changing the lives of convicted criminals. Serving jail terms enable criminals to realize their mistake and slowly work towards abandoning the old ways that led to their conviction in the first place. It is undeniable, however, that several people are bound to have questions concerning how the inmates will turn out after the education, but I believe in taking risks and giving people second chances. I support the plan to offer courses for prisoners as this will not only build their skills while they serve their jail term, but it will also impact them positively after they are finally released from jail. It is even more reasonable since the funding will be financed by money from the district attorney’s office and not using the state funds. I believe this is a bold move towards the achievement of a better society.
Judging from the already enrolled inmates, this decision seems appropriate and as Mr. Vance said, this move will eradicate the rise of crimes and the public will be safe at all times. I believe sufficient research has been done to eliminate any unforeseen circumstances and the incorporation of instructors from recognized institutions will ensure that the inmates will gain sufficient knowledge during their study. My only concern with the implementation of this program, however, is what will happen when the inmates need to go for an industrial attachment. Will they be released during the period of the attachment or will they serve their whole jail term before they get the chance to go for an industrial attachment?
I support the strategy that the jail term of the inmates will be used to determine who will be eligible for the program. The aim of this is to create better members of the society. Educating inmates with lifetime jail sentences will not help the society in any way. The creation of classroom set up in prisons will enable them to learn effectively and by the time they are through with their sentences, they will be ready and able to serve the society. The diversity in the courses offered in the prisons will ensure that inmates will graduate in different fields, therefore, the community will be enriched with the right attitude and skills.
