One of the most important and foundational unit is society is the family. The family unit faces various social problems that may alter the unit's functioning. Some of the social issues families face today are diverse women roles, recognition of family diversity, and technology's influence on the family members. This paper will discuss a news story related to social problems, attitudes towards the article, and how it relates to social issues discussed in chapter 12. A story published by the New York Times titled "Three years after family separation, she so is back, but her life is not" narrates how a mother was separated from her son. When Ms. Peren decided to move to the United States in search of a better living condition for her and her son (Dickerson, 2020), they were both Yovany sent to a shelter in Arizona. Ms. Peren was separated from her son for 26 months.
Ms. Peren became a single mother at the age of 16 years. When she was only eight years, she started earning by working in the homes of wealthy Guatemalan families who could afford to give her food. Later she was reunited with her son when a family agreed to host them. After a while, she got a job as a house cleaner to support her family (Dickerson, 2020). Though she could have been aware of moving to the United States illegally, she took the risk in an attempt to search for better living conditions. In her country, she would work for long hours to the verge of collapsing. To avoid being separated from their children, single mothers work extra hard to support their children. Also, she was separated from her son for a while. She could only communicate with him through WhatsApp and video calls. When they were reunited, they did not have a strong bond (Dickerson, 2020). It is evident from this story that single parents face various challenges, such as financial and communication problems.
