Summary
While accumulating research evidence show strong and negative effects of media on an individual, qualitative studies suggest that people have a significant influence in choosing, interpreting, and disapproving the content portrayed in the media. Nevertheless, a study by Milkie (1999) involving 60 white and minority girls aims to establish how girls are affected by pervasive images in the media of prominent females such as music celebrities. Findings indicate that most girls would find the images to be rather unrealistic and prefer seeing images of “real” girls and not those portrayed in media (Milkie, 1999). The author of the article takes a scenario of media representations of feminine images in media and evaluate their potential in influencing critical interpretations that will counter negative effects on self-concept and self-esteem. Drawing from concepts in social psychology, Milkie (1999) seeks to clarify how media affects individuals indirectly by understanding the key role of “others” in self-processes and the unique attributes of media to frame, define, and neglect different aspects of the social world. although media ensure that symbols become the focus in society, imagery is of...
