Summary
The movie Just Mercy is a true story based on justice and redemption. The director of the film attempts to reveal what is happening in society. “The real question of capital punishment in this country is, do we deserve to kill?” (Stevenson 2019). The primary aim of the movie is to identify whether capital punishment should be practiced or not. Anyone would wonder if it is the right cause of justice for someone who has committed murder. According to Stevenson (2019), capital punishment may be unethical. As a lawyer, he has helped many people to battle severe cases, including murder. Thus, Walter McMillian's case was not an exception. The movie reveals that McMillian was arrested and charged with the murder of Ronda Morrison in 1987 (Stevenson, 2019). However, the big question is, did McMillian commit the crime, and if so, should he be subjected to capital punishment?
This movie reveals the racial and economic inequalities bounding the United States' criminal justice system. The poor and people of color are charged with offenses they never committed. It is an eventual surprise for the populations since they cannot protect themselves in court. While the poor cannot afford to hire a lawyer, blacks cannot access one. Most of the white race lawyers cannot even think, not to mention defending the people of color. Stevenson (2019) reveals the murder of Morrison, an 18-year-old white cleaner at her place of work in Monroeville, Alabama. On another staging, McMillian, a black, is charged with the crime. The racism prevailing in the justice system assumes that only a black could commit such a crime. Eventually, the judgment for the offense is a death sentence, and anyone framed into the case is bound to go through the process.
However, although concerned individuals like Bryan Stevenson may intent to change the situations, they need to understand it first. Stevenson (2019) argues that he has endeavored to deal with serious cases and win through the advice he got from his grandmother. She told him, “You can’t understand most of the important things from a distance, Bryan. You have to get close.” Just Mercy helps us to get close and to understand more deeply” (Stevenson, 2019). This information is true, based on the true story of what he has experienced and also seen other people go through. According to Stevenson (2019), the criminal justice system lacks two significant ethical issues; mercy and hope. Thus, he thinks the factors can only be understood deeply when someone creates a deep level of concentration on the topic. Otherwise, they will never be captured since; significant issues cannot be inferred from a distance.
The movie Just Mercy proves that though people are suffering, they may not know what they are lacking or what they deserve to get out of the mess. Stevenson (2019) argues that the opposite of poverty is not wealthy, but justice. In this case, the people of color do not eventually need to be whites.
