Can Racial Equity Exist in American Healthcare?
Racial equity in the American healthcare system can only exist if healthcare providers eliminate bias towards white people. However, this is less than likely to happen. Black people and other minority groups in America do not receive the same quality of healthcare that white people do. According to a report by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), poverty, which is most commonly associated with black people, is not responsible for why they tend to be sicker than white people (Institute of Medicine, 2003). Instead, IOM found that racial bias is the major cause of poor health among racial minorities in America. Black, Hispanic, and Italian Americans are more likely to die of heart disease, cancer, or diabetes due to their race and not just because they lack access to quality healthcare (Institute of Medicine, 2003).
