There is no doubt that sometimes it is a bit challenging to run a small business. While it has challenges, one can get practical benefits of being the owner of the business. Entrepreneurship is an activity that I had interacted with for a long time. Even still, there are several things that I did not fully understand about entrepreneurship. The best of them is that I did not know that entrepreneurship was based on passion but rather, thought that it was associated with in-dwelling skills with which people are born (Neel, 2018). One of the interesting thing I have learned about entrepreneurship is the power to make changes when necessary. If a person sees that a business is not doing well, one should be in a position to make the necessary changes as a remedy to the problem. I thought that all entrepreneurs were just born that way and someone who was not born with such skills could not practice it. I also did not know that being an entrepreneur entailed sacrifices and even one’s own personal efforts because I initially thought that all entrepreneurs were just happy people who employed other people to do their work as relaxed and enjoyed their income (Neel, 2018). I did not know that they worked almost most hours of their day with little time for rest.
One of the three things that surprised me most on entrepreneurship were the fact that there is a likelihood for a new business to remain stagnant for a long time and can even fail (Peter, 2015). Secondly, I was surprised that as an entrepreneur, I may be forced to work up to 16 hours or even more per day from 7 days every week; instead of the normal 9am to 5pm. Lastly, it amazed me that entrepreneurial activities can force one to put aside some usual family matters and even lay off some family member who are not beneficial to the business; and resolve to have supportive friends instead.
Students who try to become successful entrepreneurs should understand that raising the money for starting businesses or even maintaining it is not easy (Peter, 2015). They must be willing to spend more from their pockets as they wait for the businesses to grow.
