What Makes a Leader?
Effective leadership takes more than an individual meeting the key competencies or requirement for the position held. However, the elements of intelligence quotient (IQ) and skills alone may not be enough to guarantee positive results for effective leadership. The ability for a person to tune into their emotional being in relating to other individuals makes it easier to build trust and understanding among all workers or members within a given department. One of the main takeaways is that emotional intelligence is integral for becoming an effective leader within a given or specific jurisdiction.
Another take-home point from the first chapter is that emotional intelligence has five key components whose collective application leads to excellent results in the diverse leadership capacities in business organizations. The five elements include self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skill. Each plays a significant role in enhancing a person’s leadership skills and the delivery of positive outcomes within their different mandates. Self-awareness, for instance, is a component of emotional intelligence that serves to offset a person’s inhibitions towards meeting their obligations at work.
Another takeaway from the chapter is also the fact that emotional intelligence can be instilled through coaching or training through the limbic system. The system serves to assist leaders in changing their poor approach to leadership and embracing their emotional being in discharging their leadership duties. One of the questions arising from the chapter is how the management can assess the efficacy of an individual’s emotional intelligence? Secondly, what are the effective strategies for impacting emotional intelligence at the workplace? An application of emotional intelligence would be embracing social skills to deal with cultural diversity during conflict resolution.

One of the key takeaways from this chapter is that emotional intelligence is crucial to creating a positive culture within an organization. A leader’s ability to fully embrace their emotional intelligence while discharging their duties encouraged open communication as well as building trust and self-confidence among members of staff. The absence of emotional intelligence, on the other hand, results in a negative attitude among the workers leading to low productivity. Thus, an emotionally intelligent leader instills a positive attitude which tunes the team towards achieving a common goal, which improves the overall performance of the organization.
Emotional intelligent leadership involves embracing both the positive and negative emotions of an individual as they are crucial to the personality of a person. The components of emotional intelligence such as self-awareness and self-regulation play a significant role in the monitoring of a person’s mood. The mood of a leader is equally an essential element in the application of emotional intelligence for effective leadership.
