Current Actions and Reactions on Attitudes/Perception of Geography
The new virus (COVID-19) emerged in Wuhan, China, and later spread to other parts of the world. According to Liu (2020), a large population of Americans believes that coronavirus was brought about by Asian Americans. Though there is still uncertainty on how it infected people. Scientists have said that the virus came naturally. There is a perception from young adults who say that coronavirus was developed in a lab. All this has made Americans show stigma towards Chinese Americans in the U.S and other parts of the world. People have also started to develop attitudes that the virus came from the Chinese.
Attitude/Perception of Race
Racism towards Asian Americans is one of the reactions that have erupted due to fear of COVID-19. No matter how they have lived in the country they are seen as “forever foreigners.” They are consistently blamed for importing the disease to the extent that American children are advised by their parents to avoid Chinese and their food. In this regard, marginalized groups are unable to seek medical care for fear of being stigmatized. Unfortunately, this may lead to a larger number of infections in the community.
Role of Social Construction
The role of social construction and conflating geographies is to ensure that everyone has the right to attainable standards of health. It also ensures that the government prevents threats to public health and thus providing medical care to everyone in need of it. Also, it would ensure that marginalized populations can access better health care without discrimination. Social construction can also make access to medical care affordable.
