Introduction
In their analysis of the influence of gangs and gang membership, particularly street gangs, Conis and DeLisi (2012) note that individuals who gravitate towards gang involvement are often marginalized from acquiring status in general in society via legitimate means, and their only option is to acquire status through illegitimate means. I largely agree with this statement, based on several factors.
Individuals who feel left out of the society's major segment often find protection, friendship, and a sense of purpose in gangs. In insecure areas, one may be compelled, by a feeling of insecurity, to join local gangs. Gangs offer one a chance to access and use guns (Weerman, Lovegrove, & Thornberry, 2015). Furthermore, positions within gangs are extremely competitive and its acquisition requires gang members to commit certain predatory crimes. In this regard, gangs provide an individual a fair chance to advance in status and gain leadership positions just like in the typical society. Gangs are a social network that acts as an alternative society, directing members on how they should live, dress, talk, and conduct themselves in general (Conis & DeLisi, 2012).
