This assignment builds on your assigned readings from your "Competing Values Leadership" textbook. OCAI stands for Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument, a validated culture survey. The OCAI is built on the Competing Values Framework (CVF), one of the top management frameworks over the past 30 years. The CVF demonstrates how a department (or whole organization) might balance two core tensions: its internal focus with its external positioning, and its individual flexibility with collective stability.
In BUSI 5113 MBA students used a personal corollary of the OCAI to profile their Managerial Behavior according to the CVF. For the businesses to operate in a dynamic environment, they have to regularly examine their culture to ascertain whether it can enable the organization to change as the environment may dictate. It is important to know that the environment determines the success or failure of the business and thus a business must adjust accordingly. OCAI is a process that helps the organization to screen its current culture and the preferred culture so as to determine the necessary path of cultural change to suit the changing conditions.
The Competing Values Framework
The competing values framework for cultural assessments was coined by Quinn and Rorbaugh (1983) from the analysis of Campbell’s Longer list of effectiveness dimension into a two dimensional pattern. There are two broad cultural dimensions; horizontal (in/out) and vertical (stability/ flexibility). The horizontal dimension is a measure of how an organization focuses on the inwards or outwards with the inwards focus being on the employees while the outwards focuses being driven towards the customers and suppliers. An organization should stick to the outwards culture when operating in a competitive environment.
On the other hand, vertical dimension focuses on the stability and flexibility of the organization. A stable organization is necessary when reliability and efficiency is paramount but an organization should consider flexibility if it is operating in an environment of change.
