Letter to Legislator
There is growing concern about the high mortality rate due to heart disease among Americans in the US. Studies have indicated that non-Hispanic whites have a higher likelihood of dying from heart disease as compared to the Hispanics. It is a preventable disease and there is growing concern over its increasing prevalence in the state. It is necessary to launch a strong campaign about the disease among the student population in order to curb its further prevalence.
It has been noted with great concern that more younger men than women suffer from the disease. Young men are to be encouraged to practice healthy habits more vigilantly. Heart disease prevalence is increased by lifestyle activities such as cigarette smoking and intake of foods that are high in cholesterol. Mortality is higher in students with diabetes and high blood pressure. In addition to this, obesity and lack of physical activity are likely to increase the chance of suffering from heart disease.
The lifestyle habits adopted by the students are posing a great danger to the student population and if left unchecked, it is going to lead to generation of an ailing work force. The students are practicing unhealthy eating habits characterized by heavy consumption of fast foods, alcohol and smoking of cigarettes. Some female students are smoking heavily believing that the smoking helps them to manage their weight better. What these young people don’t know is that the carbon monoxide in cigars forces the hearts pressure up as it works harder to deliver oxygen in the body while the nicotine narrows makes the veins and arteries narrower posing a high blood pressure risk. Physical activity on the other hand has become totally ignored.
Most of the students in the state have very tight daily schedules. Most of them are working part time and studying part time and have very minimal time to allocate for physical exercise. Exercise is important in reducing chances of getting heart disease as it ensures that the body weight stays in check as well as reduce the risk for elevated blood or low blood sugar as well as high blood pressure which increases mortality from heart disease.
Additionally, students are too busy to find time to make balanced meals with fruits and vegetables. The students often buy readily made fast foods that are mostly fried the most common being chicken and chips. These deep fried foods such as frozen pizzas, margarines, cookies, savory snacks among other fried foods contain high levels of trans fats that are harmful to the heart.
It is my wish that the legislature institutes the followingmeasures to mitigate further occurrence of the disease among the non-Hispanic whites. One of the measures would be to place as a minimum requirement for institutions of higher learning to have a gym with qualified instructors. The instit...
