According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), health surveillance is ongoing, systematic collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of data regarding a health-related event. This information is for use in public health action to reduce morbidity and mortality and to improve health. This paper seeks to address the differences between registries and other surveillance information systems. The advantages and disadvantages of building a master person index across surveillance information systems for multiple diseases will also be addressed.
Registries are more involved with patients’ management within a population while other surveillance information systems deal with disease management and prevention. Registries record patient demographics, medical history, treatment, and outcomes. This information helps in understanding how patients respond to specific medication and patient response to medication too.
