Ocuupational Safety&Health Family History. Health, Medicine, Nursing

Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

Write a descriptive paper about your family work health and safety history over the past three generations - your grandparents, parents, and yourself. Families are diverse and can be defined narrowly or broadly. For the purposes of this assignment family is defined as "two or more persons who are joined together by bonds of sharing and emotional closeness and who identify themselves as being part of the family" (M. Friedman. Family Nursing: Research, Theory, and Practice). So you may be writing about people other than (or in addition to) a parent or grandparent.
Length:
The required length is at least 4-5 pages, but no more than 7 pages. A standard page is about 250 words, so your paper should be a minimum of 1,000 words.
Address the following questions:
What jobs or occupations have you and family members held?
What health and safety issues were encountered?
Were there any short or long term health consequences from the work family members did?
What was the occupational safety and health historical context? In other words, what were significant political, economic or social events that may have had an impact on working conditions?
This is an important part of the assignment, so be sure not to skip it. It is always disappointing when a student tells a great story about his or her family, but fails make the occupational safety and health history connection and, therefore, cannot get a high grade.
I suggest you view and complete the Week 2 lecture before writing your paper. The paper is your story and is an important point of reference throughout the course.
You do not have to use a specific format (e.g. APA or Chicago) but your work should be edited, proof-read, and employ good writing mechanics. Please double-space and submit as a Word document.
You must appropriately cite any content in your paper that is not yours. I don't care what citation style you use, but your reader should be able to: 1) know the rightful owner of the content; and 2) be able to find it.
Don't forget that you can find great writing resources and citation guides in the tool section of the Learning Support Resources module.

Occupational and Safety Health Family History
As a family, different occupations have been held over the years. Our family is mainly involved in the medical field with my father, a dentist, and mother, a nurse. Their jobs are demanding, which means they have encountered difficult patients who have complex needs over the years. These jobs have an emotional and mental impact. I worked in a warehouse for three years, storing chemical agents used in agricultural products.
In the course of duty, my parents have experienced risky issues. First, a crucial occupational and safety issue was administering the wrong medication to a patient. A patient had been correctly diagnosed with a throat infection. However, during the treatment process, a mix up occurred, which caused the patient to receive the wrong dosage. This dosage caused drowsiness and nausea, causing the patient's family to be agitated. What caused the wrong medication is a fault made by one of the physicians during the treatment process. Mistakes were made from the prescription to the pharmacy stage. This caused my mother, who was working as a nurse, to administer a wrong drug to the patients. The patient exhibited strange symptoms such as convulsions that raised concern.
On the other hand, my father encountered three occupational hazards. First, the strained posture experienced at work affected his physicality. It interfered with his muscular alignment, making him develop back problems. Daily he usually stands while attending to various patients, the cumulative effect of this action had an impact on his spine. Another issue is psychological risks caused by visiting patients with severe dental problems. Dealing with many critically-ill patients deeply affected his mental state, making it difficult for him to continue in the profession (Ayatollahi et al., 2012). Further, attending to the needs of many patients daily caused severe fatigue.
Working in a warehouse caused a significant physical strain. The work involved moving bulky items every day. Withstanding this workload became very difficult. As a result, some days, I had to miss work to recover from this hard labor. I was moving large chemical consignments while at work became dangerous since one had to follow strict safety precautions to prevent any harm or injury. Another safety issue occurred during the process of loading and unloading to trucks. It was common to be pinned down or fall during this process, which made the activity dangerous. Lastly, exposure to harmful substances made the work risky to my health. The handling of chemical reagents required a lot of care (Jang & Chen, 2013). Sometimes, protective gear wasn't used, causing accidental spilling of these agents that led to burns and bruises on the body.
These occupations had a long-term effect on the health and wellbeing of the parents. One issue was the burnout caused by working long hours. This is because of the shortage of dentists, which puts a significant strain on the few available staff. This situation greatly affected the productivity of my father. As a professional, many patients depended on his services, so the physical and mental exhaustion affected his...
