To join or not to join? That is a question long asked and is never, and will never, be fully answered. Historically, joining military has long been associated with “lowly” classes seeking social mobility denied in “normal” day-to-day life. The string of wars US military has been engaged in, rightly or not, has not helped, either. Moreover, growing opportunities for professional and personal growth outside military appear too alluring for a good many high school graduates seeking less discipline and more freedom. The military has, understandably, generated a negative image over decades for all mentioned reasons but also for hushed-up abuses, surfacing once in a while, only to be allegedly suppressed, internally and by media. Yet, for all discredit US military might get, rightly or not, military service is just much more than a badge of honor or, for that matter, a list of perks enjoyed during and after service.
